RESEARCH: ART OF THE TITLE - JOJO RABBIT

Research: Art of the title – Jojo Rabbit

I have chosen to study the film opening of Jojo Rabbit as it is very entertaining and enjoyable to watch and it would make someone interested in watching the movie.

To begin with there are fast paced shots of Jojo as he steps into the shot of the camera. The editing attaches short clips of Jojo from different angles before showing his full persona.

Jojo then interacts to the camera and the audience as he describes what is going to happen throughout the movie and gives us a brief idea of any upcoming scenes. This is clearly shown when Jojo says to that camera that ‘this is going to be intense’.

The whole opening and movie is very comedic as it shows the character playing Hitler asking Jojo questions about Germany and himself to make sure that Jojo is ready. Comedy is also shown when Hitler is talking to Jojo saying that he is scrawny and unpopular.

From this film opening, it gives the audience a connection with the characters with the two main ones being Hitler and Jojo. From getting an idea of what the characters are like so early into the opening it makes the audience want to watch on and a good movie opening can grow the fan-base and community.

At the very beginning of the Jojo Rabbit opening, the editors make changes on the usual, well known Fox Pictures intro music. Instead, they add angelic voices of the kids from the movie singing a German song, in time to the well-known intro music which makes it interesting and enjoyable to watch and listen to.

The camera work shown is very professional as it is shot on a moving platform throughout the street and the camera is flat and still all the time meaning there is no blur when moving and gives a clear and vivid image.

The whole opening is very enjoyable to watch from the audience’s perspective because it is based on a controversial topic of Hitler during older times yet they turn a debatable subject and make it enjoyable and less serious. This is also shown when Jojo and Hitler are speaking to each other and Hitler is teaching Jojo how to heil him. Eventually as both of them are getting excited and jump up and down, the music and atmosphere starts to kick in. When the music starts and Jojo runs out onto the street the audience can understand that the scene is going to be fun and connecting.

Throughout the opening, historical flashbacks are also used from the editors. They add these flashback scenes to give a sense of realism of the opening. Throughout the flashback scenes showing what everything was like for children and adults in Germany back then, the title sequence also begins.

The black, bold font stands out because of the dark red highlight. There is also white fancy fonts throughout these. The colour use of red, black and white, is scene on the Nazi symbol. Therefore, the editors have linked in the title sequence with the Nazi symbol which links in with the story of the movie.
