CONSTRUCTION FILMING

Me and the dream team filmed on the 10th December, using the script presented above. We filmed in the drama studio so that we could use the black curtains to cover the room. We had high expectations with our film however as a group, we were not completely satisfied, we felt we could improve on this by using a wider range of camera angles etc.
Because of this we will still be using the same idea that we had for our film, however we will be changing the whole dynamic of it and improving it.

PLANNING MY TARGET AUDIENCE

1. Who is my primary target audience?
Realistically any 13 - 35 would most likely be interested in watching our movie and they could be from anywhere.

2. What kind of films and television are they likely to prefer?
A viewer is likely to be interested in films and shows involving action, drama and tension. Some examples of films that our audience could be interested in are:
Maze Runner
Elysium

3. What platforms do they choose to watch films and where are they likely to see information about films?
Our target audience could watch films in their home or cinemas, a lot of people like the familiar feel of watching a show in their living room, but that doesn't take away the fact that they are also likely to enjoy new shows in a big cinema.

4. What brands do they prefer?
Nike, Adidas, Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Sony

5. What makes my film stand out from the competition?
Our idea is quite unique, interesting and gripping which helps make our film stand out

. Why should my audience watch my film? For example:  Total Film / Empire / Cinema Scope / Slant / Sight and Sound says: Most powerful psychological thriller since Don't Look Now!
Because our film is unique and futuristic which helps attract audiences to our film as there are none on the market at the moment.

TREATMENT

PLANNING: TREATMENT

Futuristic London has taken a U-turn in their attempt to stop crime and serve justice. Three suspects have been abducted and put around a table in a cold integration room. A hologram projects the live image of Major Inspector Thorne to the three suspects. Thorne explains that a Miss Lottie Wilson was murdered, and they are all suspects. Using new technology, the inspector will place each of the suspects in a virtual reality which will question the integrity of each suspect. Using the information shown each suspect will vote who is guilty. Whoever is found to be guilty will be ejected into space.

Top Line and Big Question

Our top line is "The government has lost all control in London, it is all down to Major Inspector Thorne to turn around the city whether justice is served or not."

The big question is "Who is guilty?"

SCOOP-IT

In my Scoop-It!, i collected a variety of different well-known action and survival film, as our intention is to match this genre with our film opening. In this exercise, i gathered movies that interest me personally in this genre and our group can take inspiration from some of these movies and use different techniques that they use in our film opening.

DISTRIBUTION COLLAGE

 DISTRIBUTION

I chose to make a collage on the recent movie Tenet as it is one of the biggest names in the movie industry of recent months. The movie is attractive for many people and has received great reviews from the public.

My chosen film Tenet is presented as an action/sci-fi movie. With an initial and tactical release of August 12th 2020, they achieved a box office of $325.5 million. The release in August was attractive to many people as cinemas had only recently just opened, so a movie with a big attraction caused mass sell outs in many cinemas in the world.

With a budget of $205 million US Dollars, they were congratulated with the number of tickets sold.

The movie based on a secret agent who embarks on a dangerous, time-bending mission to prevent the start of World War III, receives an impressive IMDb of 7.8/10

TABLETOP

Our film opening began with a picture of three men, all with squares drawn around their face in red pen. This could reflect on how the man wants to kill them through the red coloured ink, implying the blood. The camera then pans slowly to a brown briefcase being opened, showing inside the gun, a passport and some money. The showing of a gun, and also red boxes around mens faces connotes a man may be trying to kill the three men and has a plan with his passport and American dollars. The camera then pans to a deck of cards, which the man spreads out on the table, and by coincidence the combination AK47 is the outliers of the deck and is what is seen by the camera. This gives a much stronger sense of death.

ON THE SET

Brief account of learning to use the cameras and tripods, what filming terminology to use on set and good practice in editing

This account is about what I learnt and what equipment we were shown when we were shown how to use the Canon cameras and Manfrotto tripods.

Cameras and tripods. In groups we passed the camera around and each of us practised how to handle the camera, insert the battery and memory card. When you pass the cameras around you should say 'yours' and 'mine' to avoid the risk of dropping it.  We learned how to set up a tripod and to 'bubble' it using the spirit level to help make the camera balanced and in focus. We explored the camera such as how to focus.  The exposure on the camera is adjusted by moving the dial up and down.

White balance (WB) is the process of removing unrealistic colour casts, so that objects which appear white in person are rendered white in the photo. Proper camera white balance has to take into account the "colour temperature" of a light source, which refers to the relative warmth or coolness of white light. You adjust it by selecting the ‘WB’ on the camera, it will then come up with little pictures representing difference colour tones that are used in different lights which will give a more realistic effect.

180-degree rule. We learned about the 180 degree rule.  The 180-degree rule is a cinematography guideline that states that two characters in a scene should maintain the same left/right relationship to one another. When the camera passes over the invisible axis connecting the two subjects, it is called crossing the line and the shot becomes what is called a reverse angle.

On set We then learnt the terminology used in the film industry on set. The director shouts 'Standby' before filming to ensure that everyone is ready and when they are, they reply 'Standing by.'

When the director shouts ‘rolling’, everyone on set must be quiet, then he /she shouts ‘action’ which tell the actors to start. After the shoot, the director has said the last ‘cut’, he / she will say ‘strike the kit’ which is the film crew's cue to pack away, put the batteries on charge and ensure that the footage is uploaded.

Good practice in editing. We are using Final Cut Pro and iMovie on the iMacs in the media studio. When uploading our footage, we should create a folder to keep the shots. These folders are called bins and the unedited footage from cameras are called rushes.

CONTINUITY EXERCISE

We based our film on football, capturing different shots such as, POV, arc pan, reaction, over the shoulder pan up and a tracking shot.

Our group included me, Matt, Ben and Sam where Matt, Ben and Sam all were players and I was the camera man, who put in an exceptional shift.

The film took us a double lesson to film and edit, due to the fact we had to retake some shots as there were problems on set.

In the end our film turned out well, as we showed off multiple camera angles, and post production made it better.

RESEARCH: ART OF THE TITLE - JOJO RABBIT

Research: Art of the title – Jojo Rabbit

I have chosen to study the film opening of Jojo Rabbit as it is very entertaining and enjoyable to watch and it would make someone interested in watching the movie.

To begin with there are fast paced shots of Jojo as he steps into the shot of the camera. The editing attaches short clips of Jojo from different angles before showing his full persona.

Jojo then interacts to the camera and the audience as he describes what is going to happen throughout the movie and gives us a brief idea of any upcoming scenes. This is clearly shown when Jojo says to that camera that ‘this is going to be intense’.

The whole opening and movie is very comedic as it shows the character playing Hitler asking Jojo questions about Germany and himself to make sure that Jojo is ready. Comedy is also shown when Hitler is talking to Jojo saying that he is scrawny and unpopular.

From this film opening, it gives the audience a connection with the characters with the two main ones being Hitler and Jojo. From getting an idea of what the characters are like so early into the opening it makes the audience want to watch on and a good movie opening can grow the fan-base and community.

At the very beginning of the Jojo Rabbit opening, the editors make changes on the usual, well known Fox Pictures intro music. Instead, they add angelic voices of the kids from the movie singing a German song, in time to the well-known intro music which makes it interesting and enjoyable to watch and listen to.

The camera work shown is very professional as it is shot on a moving platform throughout the street and the camera is flat and still all the time meaning there is no blur when moving and gives a clear and vivid image.

The whole opening is very enjoyable to watch from the audience’s perspective because it is based on a controversial topic of Hitler during older times yet they turn a debatable subject and make it enjoyable and less serious. This is also shown when Jojo and Hitler are speaking to each other and Hitler is teaching Jojo how to heil him. Eventually as both of them are getting excited and jump up and down, the music and atmosphere starts to kick in. When the music starts and Jojo runs out onto the street the audience can understand that the scene is going to be fun and connecting.

Throughout the opening, historical flashbacks are also used from the editors. They add these flashback scenes to give a sense of realism of the opening. Throughout the flashback scenes showing what everything was like for children and adults in Germany back then, the title sequence also begins.

The black, bold font stands out because of the dark red highlight. There is also white fancy fonts throughout these. The colour use of red, black and white, is scene on the Nazi symbol. Therefore, the editors have linked in the title sequence with the Nazi symbol which links in with the story of the movie.
